India opted to play just one specialist pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, while relying on Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube as seam-bowling all-rounders, complemented by a three-pronged spin attack.Speaking on Friday, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak clarified the reasoning behind the selection. “Because, the first discussion we have with the head coach and the captain is that obviously, these 15 are like this, everyone deserves to play. If any player is not playing, it will be difficult for him because he will feel missed out. But, at the end of the day, it’s a team sport. So, everyone knows that there is no agenda, there is no personal liking, disliking,” Kotak told reporters. He stressed that decisions are taken purely on conditions and team balance.
“Whatever is best for the team, captain and head coach will decide and do that. And I don’t think there is any doubt in anybody’s mind. So, whoever is not playing, they are always trying to help the guys who are playing,” he added.Kotak also addressed Sanju Samson’s new role at No. 5, calling him versatile enough to adapt anywhere in the batting order. With Pakistan up next on September 14, India could consider tweaking their XI by bringing in a second pacer to exploit Dubai’s conditions. Whether Arshdeep’s motivational message was a hint of his readiness or simply personal reflection, all eyes will be on the selection sheet when cricket’s fiercest rivalry resumes.
