Barbora Krejcikova produced one of the great fightbacks of this year’s US Open to deny Taylor Townsend a first-ever Grand Slam singles quarter-final, edging past the American in a dramatic three-set clash on Monday.
Townsend, better known for her doubles success, made a dream start by taking the opening set and raising hopes of a landmark win on home soil. Roared on by the New York crowd, she played with confidence and variety, unsettling the 2021 French Open champion.
The match turned into an extraordinary second set, which stretched into a marathon tie-break. Townsend twice came within a point of victory, but Krejcikova refused to let go, saving chance after chance before finally snatching it 15–13. The Czech’s resilience kept her alive in a contest that had seemed to be slipping away.
The third set was just as wild. Townsend, showing signs of fatigue, fell behind after Krejcikova broke early. But the American fought back bravely, drawing fresh energy from the crowd, fist-pumping and roaring after breaking back to level. For a moment, it seemed she might yet pull off the upset.
But Krejcikova held her nerve at the crucial moments. With the score at 5-3, she created match points on Townsend’s serve, only to be denied. Finally serving for the match, Krejcikova displayed her trademark composure, mixing deep groundstrokes with clever slices to edge over the finish line. She sealed victory on her second match point when Townsend’s lob sailed long, completing a comeback that saw her save eight match points in total.
For Townsend, it was a heartbreaking end to her deepest singles run at Flushing Meadows. At times on the verge of tears, she left everything on court but came up just short of making her first Grand Slam quarter-final.
Krejcikova, meanwhile, showed why she remains one of the tour’s toughest competitors. Calm under pressure, she turned what looked like certain defeat into a triumph, booking her spot in the last eight with a performance full of grit and class.
As the players left the court to standing ovations, the sense lingered that this match would be remembered as one of the great battles of this year’s US Open.
