Palmeiras rewarded their raucous fans with an extra-time goal, defeating Botafogo and advancing to the Club World Cup quarterfinals.

PHILADELPHIA -- After a grueling 100 minutes, the decisive goal arrived, proving well worth the anticipation.

Palmeiras substitute Paulinho masterfully maneuvered into open space and delivered a precise, low shot that slipped through a defender's legs and into the Botafogo net. As he sprinted towards the corner flag, he gestured for calm, but the thousands of Palmeiras fans behind the goal, who had been singing throughout the match, erupted in wild celebration, creating a vibrant sea of green and white.

The atmosphere surrounding the Palmeiras vs. Botafogo match transcended the on-field action. The quality of Palmeiras' 1-0 victory in the round of 16 – the first of the FIFA Club World Cup knockout stage, a historic clash between two teams from Brazil, and the latest chapter in their burgeoning rivalry – may not have been exceptional. However, the electrifying noise and vibrant displays of the fans at Lincoln Financial Field more than compensated.

Palmeiras supporters dominated the stadium with their numbers and vocal support, filling the stand behind the goal at the north end. They created a stunning card mosaic before kickoff, waved inflatable balloons throughout the first half, and brandished hundreds of green-and-white flags in the second. As the game approached extra time in the 90th minute, they unveiled an enormous tifo, featuring long green-and-white stripes stretching from the back of the stand down to the field.

The air reverberated with a single, powerful chant: "Palmeiras! Palmeiras! Palmeiras!" At the opposite end, Botafogo's fans, though fewer in number, valiantly attempted to match the energy, mirroring their team's efforts.

While not a historically established derby like Palmeiras-Corinthians or Botafogo-Flamengo, the rivalry between Palmeiras, from Sao Paulo, and Botafogo, from Rio de Janeiro, has intensified in recent years, evolving into a battle for supremacy in Brazilian football. The peak of this rivalry occurred in 2023 when Palmeiras staged a remarkable 4-3 comeback victory over Botafogo, with Endrick, now with Real Madrid, scoring twice after trailing 3-0, ultimately leading to their league title win.

Botafogo retaliated in 2024, securing both Brazil's Serie A title and the Copa Libertadores, while also eliminating Palmeiras along the way. In their recent encounters, Botafogo had consistently emerged victorious, entering the Philadelphia match on a five-game unbeaten streak against Palmeiras.

In this match, Palmeiras demonstrated superior play and generated more scoring opportunities, led by Estêvão, a rising star bound for European football, and Vitor Roque, a seasoned player with European experience. Throughout normal time, Palmeiras consistently created the best chances. In the ninth minute, Estêvão played a key role in their first opportunity, with the ball narrowly missing the goal. Before halftime, midfielder Richard Ríos, another player attracting European interest, sent a powerful shot just over the bar. After the break, Estêvão's curling shot was parried away by the goalkeeper, Vitor Roque's overhead kick was blocked, and Mauricio's header was tipped over the crossbar.

Whatever the stereotypes surrounding Brazilian football and joga bonito, Botafogo deviated from the script. Whether by choice or circumstance, they struggled to create attacking opportunities, managing only four shots – one on target – and an expected goals (xG) value of 0.13 in the first 90 minutes. While they succeeded in forcing extra time, it ultimately proved inconsequential. Palmeiras maintained their relentless pressure, culminating in Paulinho's go-ahead goal. Botafogo responded with late chances, capitalizing on their opponents being reduced to 10 men, but their sustained pressure on the Palmeiras goal proved too little, too late.

As the final whistle blew, the Palmeiras squad sprinted to celebrate with their devoted supporters. They had undeniably been the driving force behind the game's energy. Brazilian fans have significantly enhanced the tournament's atmosphere, and Palmeiras' fans will have the opportunity to recreate this experience in the quarterfinals, back at Lincoln Financial Field on Friday.

"A few years ago we'd have paid to play in this competition. And now here we are," Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira remarked afterward. "If we win, great. And if we lose, at least we gave our all. And that's what we did today. The players had so much energy on the pitch, and I have no words to describe our fans. They're absolutely extraordinary, and I'm sure they felt represented by the team."
