Stefanos Tsitsipas’ father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, was warned for coaching his son from the sidelines during his second-round fixture of the US Open 2025 against Daniel Altmaier. Tsitsipas got knocked out of the tournament after losing to Altmaier in a five-set clash.
The 26th seed looked well on course to emerge victorious in the fixture, which lasted over four hours, as he won back-to-back second and third sets. However, Altmaier scripted a remarkable comeback by winning the last two sets to seal the match 7-6(5), 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
During the intense on-court battle, a controversial moment grabbed attention as Apostolos Tsitsipas was warned for coaching Stefanos from the sidelines. Apostolos was shouting out verbal instructions to his son from the opposite end of the court, which, as per the guidelines, is an offence. It also marked the first warning registered on court, since coaching was legalised.
However, it wasn’t the only contentious moment witnessed in the match, as after losing the fixture, Tsitsipas was seen exchanging words with Altmaier as the two players shook hands. The Greek player seemed upset with Altmaier for serving underarm during the fourth set and was heard pointing out the same.
US Open 2025 Updates
The confrontation didn’t go down well with the packed crowd at the Grandstand court as they booed Tsitsipas on his way out of the playing arena. Earlier, Altmaier was in no mood to surrender in front of Tsitsipas despite facing a match point in the fourth and fifth sets.
The 26-year-old from Germany managed to fight off break points in four straight service games in the final set. Meanwhile, Altmaier will next lock horns with Alex de Minaur in round 3 clash, who progressed after losing against Shintaro Mochizuki in straight sets.
