Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe produced a brilliant performance on Friday, September 5, to clinch the US Open women’s doubles title. The pair defeated top seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 29 minutes.
The victory also served as redemption for Dabrowski and Routliffe, who had lost to the same duo at Wimbledon 2024 in straight tie-break sets, 7-6, 7-6. At that time, Dabrowski and Routliffe were the No. 2 seeds, while Siniakova and Townsend entered as the No. 4 seeds.
US Open semi-finals Updates
After sealing the win, Dabrowski and Routliffe embraced in celebration, with the moment carrying extra weight for Dabrowski. It marked her first major triumph since undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She had even delayed part of her treatment last year to compete at Wimbledon, where she and Routliffe reached the final.
For Siniakova and Townsend, the defeat was a missed chance to add another prestigious trophy. The pair had already captured the Australian Open title in January and backed it up with Wimbledon glory last summer, but the US Open crown eluded them this time.
The doubles loss was not the only heartbreak for Taylor Townsend at the 2025 U.S. Open. In the women’s singles fourth round, she ultimately fell in a dramatic three-set battle (1-6, 7-6 [15-13], 3-6) against Barbora Krejkov, despite holding eight match points.
Ranked around No. 139, Townsend began her campaign with a solid win over Antonia Ruzic (6-4, 6-4), before stunning 25th seed Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1 in the second round. That match ignited controversy when Ostapenko accused her of having “no class” and “no education” following a net-cord incident, sparking widespread debate on sportsmanship and racial undertones. Ostapenko later apologized on social media, citing a language misunderstanding, while Townsend responded by stressing resilience and composure.
Unfazed by the drama, Townsend went on to upset World No. 5 Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-2 to reach the last 16, but could not have the final say against Krejckova.
