Legendary Novak Djokovic chased his 25th Grand Slam title at the US Open. The 38-year-old, who skipped the build-up to the tournament, seemed to be in a jolly mood ahead of what could turn out to be a gruelling competition. On Friday, Djokovic's cute interaction with a young fan named Emerie went viral on the internet.
In a video uploaded by the US Open account on X, Djokovic was seen stopping at a lemonade stall run by a young tennis player. The young star, Emerie, told the Serbian that she looked forward to watching him play in the US Open. Djokovic’s warm questions and her cute replies won the hearts of tennis fans on Friday.
Novak Djokovic is set to begin his US Open without having played a competitive match since Wimbledon. It was a calculated risk he was willing to take after dedicating significant time to training over the past three to four weeks. The Serbian world number seven, who is pursuing an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title, adjusted his schedule by skipping the recent hard-court tune-ups in Toronto and Cincinnati to focus more on the four major tournaments.
Having secured his fourth US Open and last major title in 2023, Djokovic felt justified in choosing when and where to compete. At 38 years old, he prioritised spending more time with his family and no longer enjoyed the demands of the two-week Masters events, which he found too lengthy. His main focus remained on performing well at the Grand Slam tournaments.
As a co-founder of the Professional Tennis Players Association, Djokovic also expressed his views on the ongoing debate about the extended two-week Masters events. Although the contracts governing these events were long-term, spanning 30 years and making changes unlikely, he supported player opposition to the schedule. However, he pointed out that top athletes often did not fully engage in negotiations, which was necessary for making meaningful progress not only for current players but also for future generations.
